During the last two decades, China has established a big economic presence in most African international locations. Its profitable economic investment package, flexible political method, and targeted huge-ticket growth initiatives underneath the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) present an ostensibly huge opportunity to African nations. However, the unilateral nature of the initiative, the lack of transparency and accountability to African international locations, and the absence of tasks that straight benefit locals have raised suspicions and fuelled local resentment.

Announced by president Jinping in 2013, the primary goal of the Belt and Road Initiative is to rejuvenate the historical trade routes which related Asia to Europe. Then the routes have been collectively recognized as the Silk Road or the Silk Route. The BRI has two elements: the belt and the street. The ‘Belt’ refers to the "Silk Road Economic Belt" which is land-based and will connect China with Central Asia, Eastern and Western Europe. The ‘Road’ refers back to the 21st century "Maritime Silk Road" which is sea-based and will join China to South -East Asia, Africa and Central Asia.

China is step by step becoming extra influential economically, diplomatically, and geostrategically within the Mediterranean Sea. Huge investments and mutually beneficial commerce relations between China and Mediterranean nations are increasing Beijing’s stake in regional affairs whereas exposing it to significant threats. The political instability and religious extremism in a number of nations in the wider Mediterranean area raises the question of whether Beijing would be prepared to take on a leadership function, with all of the duties that that might entail.

100 billion. Up to now, two Belt and Road Forums, held Beijing in 2017 and 2019, have communicated - and expanded - the core ideas and themes of cooperation. Fundamentally then, Belt and Road is an endeavour in connectivity. Not surprisingly, considerable debate has surrounded the deeper motivations underpinning such an bold undertaking, and whether or not BRI is essentially conceived to address domestic points or if it represents a concerted overseas policy to secure regional primacy.
